The 20 Questions Book Tag

I got this tag from Destiny at Howling Libraries. It’s been a couple weeks since I’ve partaken in a tag, so I figured this would be a good use of my time today. 😀

1. HOW MANY BOOKS ARE TOO MANY BOOKS IN A SERIES?

I’d say… 5+. With the exception of Harry Potter, of course. But yeah, unless a book series is just the best series of all time, I tend to lose interest after book 3 or 4. I started buddy reading this YA vampire series called House of Night a while back, but that series currently has 13 novels and counting. I’m sorry, but that is just insane. I think I got through the first five before I lost interest.

2. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT CLIFFHANGERS?

I feel like everyone has a love/hate relationship with cliffhangers. Although I will say cliffhangers at the end of chapters > cliffhangers at the end of books. Especially if the next book hasn’t come out yet. That’s just unfair, and I usually lose that “I gotta know what happens next!” drive by the time the next book comes out, so it just doesn’t work as well.

3. HARDCOVER OR PAPERBACK

Paperback. I feel like I’m in the minority here, but paperbacks are just so much easier to handle. They’re lighter, they’re easier to hold, they have a bit more bend to them… Plus, they’re normally a lot cheaper.

4. FAVOURITE BOOK

5. LEAST FAVOURITE BOOK

The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker. I honestly started it because the cover is so pretty, and I was really liking it at first, but I don’t know, I just started losing interest. There were a lot of characters being introduced right after one another so I kept losing sight of the title characters. I might pick it back up eventually, but as of now, it’s been sitting off to the side for the last few weeks.

11. NEWEST BOOK YOU’VE READ

Oh gosh, I couldn’t even tell you. I haven’t even bought a new book in ages. I normally get my books from used book sales or used book websites, so most of them are at least a few years old by the time they get to me.

12. FAVOURITE AUTHOR

13. BUYING BOOKS OR BORROWING BOOKS

Buying, definitely. I don’t even like borrowing books from libraries anymore, mainly because sometimes it takes me longer than a few weeks to finish a book and I don’t want to have to worry about returning it on time. Plus, I like adding to my library!

14. A BOOK YOU DISLIKE THAT EVERYBODY ELSE SEEMS TO LIKE

Hm. I honestly can’t think of one right now. I tend to stray away from books that are super popular, so I don’t always read books that everyone else seems to like. However, when I do actually read books that seemingly everyone else is reading at the time, I tend to like them.

15. BOOKMARKS OR DOG EARS

Bookmarks. Whether it’s an actual bookmark or a ripped off piece of notebook paper, I’ll choose place markers over dog-eared pages any day. Those creases never go away!

16. A BOOK YOU CAN ALWAYS RE-READ

I’m sure this is a lot of people’s answer, but the Harry Potter series. It’s my comfort read. I’ve gone back to that series so many times, and it’s always good to me.

17. CAN YOU READ WHILST LISTENING TO MUSIC

Noooo. Even instrumental music can distract me. I need total silence to be able to really get sucked into a book.

18. ONE POV OR MULTIPLE POVS

I really like multiple PoVs, as long as there aren’t too many. Two or three is probably the max for my taste. Otherwise, one PoV will do.

19. DO YOU READ A BOOK IN ONE SITTING OR OVER MULTIPLE DAYS?

I very rarely read books in one sitting anymore. I used to do this a lot, but over the last few years I’ve had a much harder time sitting down and reading for long periods of time. It still happens every now and then — like when I read Stephen King’s Misery in two days — but most of the time it takes me days, even weeks, to get through a book, even if it’s a really good one.

20. A BOOK YOU’VE READ BECAUSE OF THE COVER

I actually judge books by their cover a lot. I can’t think of any I’ve read recently (aside from those mentioned in this post), but most of the books I buy at book sales are chosen because they have interesting covers. I don’t always have time to read the synopsis, especially at larger book sales that take me 3+ hrs to search through even without pausing to read synopses, so sometimes I’ll just grab books based on their covers and look over them later.

  1. I have to admit that I read this going yes, yes, really?, yes, not for me!
I can’t stand it when someone dog ears a page! I also prefer paperbacks for practical reasons but hardback for aesthetics.
I did read The Golem and the Jinni Jninni and enjoyed it but I do remember it being something I had to pace myself through.
Usually I’m a binge reader because I have no self control! I find myself at 6am saying “one more page!”.

    1. I also think hardbacks look better, but they’re also a lot harder to fit into my purse!

I can see that. I think part of my problem was that I read the notes from the author in the back of the book. She was saying that the story was based on her and her husband’s life and began as a non-fiction tale, and idk why but that just threw me off. While I do love non-fiction, I don’t like it being sprung on me like that, and it just messes up my groove!

I miss being that kind of reader! I used to stay up til all hours of the night reading, but now reading that late just puts me to sleep.

      1. And I totally agree about them being cheaper! Buy 1 hardback for $25 or 3 paperbacks for $25? Hmm…. Not that I buy print books as much. Again I like having something to flip through in my hands but buying ebooks means I get more bang for my buck. And prevents the dreaded “which book am I bringing with me on vacation?”

I didn’t know that about The Golem and the Jinni. I don’t mind pulling from real life but I don’t know if I want to read your autobiography with just names changed, I agree.

Being that type of reader gets me in trouble all the time! Oh I have to be at work at 10am and its currently 6am and I haven’t gone to sleep yet? Just one more chapter then I’ll close the book! Then the next day I’m a zombie!

      2. Exactly! I wish I could get into e-books. It sounds so handy to just have everything in one device, but I just can’t let go of physical books.

THAT. That’s exactly it. It ruined my reading experience! Shame cause I was really enjoying it before that. I’ll probably still try and get through it at some point.

        Hahaha, I can imagine!

      1. Mine too, as I don’t have any friends who read books, so I started blogging 🙂 Yes, I loved Misery, and I couldn’t stop, even though I watched the movie several times before, and then once more right after I finished the book 🙂 So far it’s my favorite from Stephen King, but I haven’t read much of him yet. 🙂

  2. THIRTEEN BOOKS?? What? How has the plot not concluded yet?

And yes, dog ears are horrible and I get very pissed when someone borrows my books and I get it back dog-eared with creases here and there 😡 Also, paperbacks FTW for the same reasons and I find myself taking care of them better when they’re paperbacks because they are feeble (lmao) with little protection like little pets.

      1. LOOOOOOOOOL ok I loved that show and the first season was awesome. Then… something happened at the end of season one. Ok season 2 was awesome, but suddenly another problem happened which was not a problem before! There are now 4 seasons.

      2. Ugh. I get so frustrated with shows like that. Have you read the book? I saw it was based on a book, and I feel like I’ll probably like that more than the show.

      3. I haven’t, but apparently it’s quite different. There’s a whole character in the book with important features that doesn’t even EXIST in the show. Plus, there’s a TV show made from the books so they’re probably great!

      4. No idea! Like I kept on looking for this character since all the book fans kept on mentioning her in fanfictions (oops), but she ain’t there at all.
