Top Ten Tuesday: Spring Reads

Top Ten Tuesday is a book blog meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Every Tuesday, a different top-ten-themed post is uploaded, and this week’s prompt is spring TBR lists!

First off, let me warn you guys: I hate TBR lists. I’m so bad at sticking to them. I typically base my next reads on my current mood, which obviously changes pretty often, so I honestly have no idea what I’ll feel like picking up next. So I generally don’t make TBR lists because I just don’t end up following them and then I feel bad for not keeping with it. BUT WHATEVER. I still want to take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday post, so I’ll post the books I’d like to read this season.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

I’ve mentioned this a million times already on this blog, but I’m currently reading The Hunger Games. YES, STILL. It’s not that I’m not enjoying it, because I really, really am! I’ve just been so busy with stuff at home and trying to land a job that’s a little more consistent than the online work I’m doing now, and I’ve just been so busy I’ve hardly had any time to just sit down and read. I’m hoping to fit some time in today to get a good chunk (maybe the rest) of the novel read. Regardless, I desperately want to read the second and third books in the trilogy.

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

See above. 😉

Terminal Core by Lynn Steigleder

This one was actually sent to me by the author in exchange for a review. Since I don’t have Catching Fire or Mockingjay in my possession yet, I’ll likely be starting on this one next, so keep an eye out for that review!

Pet Sematary by Stephen King

I still need to read my second King novel! As I’ve mentioned before (and posted about), I read Misery a few weeks ago and loved it, and I’ve been wanting to pour through another King novel. I’ve heard great things about Pet Sematary, so I’ve decided this will be my next King read!

Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz

Another thriller/horror novelist that I’m way behind the times on. I’ve never read a Koontz novel before, but I’ve heard he’s great, and I want to see what I’m missing out on. I’ve decided my first read of his will either be Odd Thomas or Frankenstein, but I think I’m leaning more toward Odd Thomas to start.

Monstrous Affections: An Anthology of Beastly Tales by Kelly Link and Gavin J. Grant

Based on the stories of mine that he’s read, my writing professor recommended Kelly Link’s magical realism stories to me. I love magical realism, so I bought a few of her books as Christmas presents to myself. I didn’t realize at the time that Monstrous Affections was a collection of stories by other authors, edited by Kelly Link, but ah well. I started reading it a few months back anyway, and there’s some interesting stories in there. I put it down “temporarily”… and then forgot about it. So I’d like to pick this one back up and finish it soon.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick

I’ve been meaning to read this one for a while but only just picked up a copy at a local used book store a few weeks ago. I started reading it that day, but I just wasn’t feeling it at the time. I told you I have to be in the mood for certain books! I want to give it another go soon, though.

Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker

HAVE YOU GUYS SEEN THIS SERIES ON NETFLIX?!?!?!! If you have, TALK TO ME ABOUT IT!!! My boyfriend and I were both obsessed with it when it first came out, so when I found out it was based on a book, obviously I had to get it. Definitely needing to read this one soon!

Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach

I found this book at a thrift store, and it sounds super interesting. Goodreads says it’s “oddly compelling, often hilarious,” which sounds strange when looking at the book title, but I like that kind of stuff. It reminds me of David Sedaris’ short story Graveyard Shift. If you guys haven’t read this, click this! –> David Sedaris reading Graveyard Shift.

How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell

I loved these movies, and I have a friend who’s read the books and said they’re just as good. I came across the first few in the series at a book sale recently, so of course I just had to grab them. They’re short YA reads, but the movies are so cute, and I’m excited to read the books!

    1. GIVE ME ALL THE NOVEL-LENGTH COMMENTS! And omg I love that you love Mindhunter, too! WE’RE MEANT TO BE BLOGGING FRIENDS!!! I was so obsessed with the show that I ended up watching interviews with the serial killers that show up in the series. Have you watched the one they did with Kemper? They took the interviews in the show almost directly from the actual interviews!

        Let me expand my haiku first: I also last read Misery by King, and I'm torn between Pet Sematary, Salem's Lot and 11/22/63 as my next read. I've watched movie/TV versions of all, and I'm still having nightmares about Zelda from PS, sweet Jesus on a toast, so I'm both inclined and not towards that one, I'll wait for your review to decide.

        How to train your dragon – ahhhh! This one is on my quicky-reads list after I finish A series of unfortunate events. I'll also mention it in my next post – stay tuned!

        Mindhunter – let me bury you in fangirling. 😀 I LOVED the show, and as I've never heard of John E Douglas before (gasp), I immediately added it to my most urgent of tbrs. I've also never read a true crime novel (gasp gasp), so I don't know what to expect, but – I have a confession to make. I'm obsessed with serial killers to the point I dig deeper online than I should, scare myself to death, stop researching altogether, recover, and repeat a couple of months later.

        That is why I haven't watched any interviews yet, I'm saving that for my next wave of serial self-harm, but I did figure out the mini intro scenes pretty quickly (clap clap) and then conducted some serious research. The tuna can scenes were sooo tense, and wtf, I had to hide behind my bf, and he was scared too hahaha. And Kemper! He is such a sweetheart! (I do realize what I just said) So for my next serial killer tea party I'll read the book, watch the interviews, and do a quick research on the upcoming cases for season 2. I have to dose it to keep my sanity and calm down my anxiety 😀

        I’ve had a lot of people suggest Pet Sematary as my next read. It’s been aaaages since I’ve seen the movie, so I honestly don’t remember anything about it. But I saw pics while I was looking for a picture of the book cover to use, and that shit looks terrifying! I’m probably gonna have nightmares from it.

        LOL omg I’ve done the exact same research-scare self-research thing! I creep myself out all the time (see: reading Stephen King, lol) to the point of wanting to leave all the lights on, but I always come back for me. And don’t worry, I hadn’t heard of John Douglas before, either. I’ve read a couple true crime novels before and listening to some podcasts, though. It definitely works for the creeped-out factor when you remember everything you’re reading actually happened.

        AHAHA, omg you’re cracking me up. Kemper is so interesting! I used to be fascinated by serial killers (still am, but I do far less research these days). That’s part of the reason why I became a psych major. It blows my mind the things people can do. People actually MURDER other people. And they’re OKAY with it. It’s nuts. But I love learning about how their minds work. Definitely update me on your serial killer binging! I haven’t done much research on season 2 stuff — I don’t wanna spoil it! The first season messed. me. UP. In the best possible way, of course. I can’t wait for season 2!!!!

      3. It’s been 20~ years since I saw Pet Sematary on a sleepover without our parents knowing what we watched, and Zelda literally became our boogieman from that day onward. Her and that ankle-biting scene are also the main reason I became a hypochondriac, and why I tuck in my feet when I sleep haha 😀 Ugh now I want to go to the library to pick it up, but first I have to untangle myself from the mess I’ve made on netgalley (I have an itchy finger when it comes to requesting free books)

        Yess, the mind-working thing is what fascinates me the most! It’s a mystery to me what can drive a person not only to kill, but to continue doing it like collecting trophies. I regretted my college choice several times because human psyche fascinates me more and more these days, but then again I wouldn’t have any use of it here as we have 1 known serial killer in our country’s history 😀 That’s probably why I’m so interested, we don’t have that here, and USA has hundreds – still lots of research ahead of me 😀 I will most certainly update you on my next adventure – without spoilers of course! 🙂

      4. Haha, karma at its worse! Oh gosh, that’s exactly why I haven’t joined in on those types of sites. At least not until I’ve finished Terminal Core. It’s so easy to go overboard requesting more books to review!

        There are tons of websites that offer free online college courses! You could check out some of the psych classes. Oh wow, only one in history?? That’s crazy! Yeah it was weird watching Mindhunter cause one of the killers they featured (the one who killed that young girl with a rock. I think she was a cheerleader) was super close to where I grew up. Like. It happened in one of the next towns over from me. Obv I wasn’t born yet, but still.

      5. Oh but if you change your mind – netgalley has some pretty awesome books! And there is a ‘read now’ option with titles you can read now without requesting. There’s a graphic novel/anthology thingy by Gaiman at the moment. 🙂

        Wow, that is genuinely creepy, makes me glad I live in my country :/

I’ve only received eArcs, but I don’t know about the USA/UK readers, it could be that they get physical copies too, you’d have to ask around :/ But for graphic novels/comics there’s Adobe digital editions program you need to download and then read them on your computer 🙂 Novels I send through to my kindle.

      11. Yeah I ended up downloading an e-reader so I could read this graphic novel. Graphic novels aren’t as big of a deal cause they’re pretty quick reads, but I don’t have a Kindle or anything, and sitting at the computer for enough time to read a full length novel would kill my back, lol. I looked around and it looks like some authors offer physical copies. I guess it just depends on the book! I’m excited to do some ARC review, though 😀

Yay! 😀 I think these are exclusively tied to Adobe DE, but I never tried to open the files in a different reader. 🙂 Yes, graphic novels wouldn’t even be possible on a kindle as it’s b&w, but it’s okay on a computer since most are short. 🙂 I know what you mean, I used to read novels on my computer, then on my phone – it’s awful 😀

      13. I felt bad because I turned down a review request recently because only an e-book was being offered. I’m just like, I’d love to read it but sorry noooooo to e-books lol. Did you decide to pass on the Gaiman graphic novel or are you gonna read it despite it only having one of his stories in it? I’m about halfway done with it now and it’s not bad! Some of the early stories are pretty awful, but others are really good! I’ll probably be posting my review tomorrow.

That’s too bad :/ I work all day in front of a computer so I’m used to staring at a screen, so I got hooked to kindle easily, but I get what you mean 🙂 Nooo, I’ll take the graphic novel, but even though it’s free it will count against my % rating, and I already have 7 (gasp) books to finish, so I at least have to finish 2 🙂 Plus, I’ll decide based on your review 😀

      15. What’s the percent rating mean?? Is that like the ratio of how many books you’ve received vs. how many of those you’ve reviewed or something?

        Ugh, it’s not looking good. There are a few really good ones in there, but overall… idk, man.

      16. Yes, that’s it, and the recommended one is 80%, and it doesn’t affect you much in the beginning, but the more you hoard… 😀

        I found some gems there over the years, usually in the graphic novel category, but some novels too. And the ‘read now’ category is a hit or miss with me :/

        It’s pretty cool that they have that category. So do you have to be approved for the other ones you request? Or do they just send them out to whoever requests them?

      18. I don’t have time to read because of blogging ahaha 😀 I’m trying to finish all by the end of the month because I bought 4 books recently, so I gotta read my arcs soon 😀

        Yep, you request a book and then wait for approval. They may refuse based on country, no active blog, etc, I mostly get rejected because I’m not from usa, but it gets better with time and the more reviews you send out. It went pretty quickly for me, but I still can’t get the most popular ones grrr

    1. Exactly! I wish I wouldn’t have watched the movie so close to reading the book, though. I’d be blowing through the book a lot faster if I didn’t know what was going to happen. It’s still good, though!

  7. I’ve only heard of (and read) The Hunger Games books. I’m too much of a scaredy cat to read anything by Stephen King (I keep on making my boyfriend do it so he can read it to me but alas, we are both cowards), so best of luck reading that one, will be waiting for your review

    1. omg, King is inTENSE. If you think you’ll be freaked out by his books, you’re probably right. I was totally freaked out by Misery. I had to put it down during some parts cause they were just too much for me (mostly cause of the gore/gross factor). I’m honestly nervous about starting Pet Sematary cause I’m sure that one’s gonna be even worse.

      2. I have not! I’ve been meaning to but it’s a massive book lol. I’m wondering how I’ll handle it. I don’t normally read scary books. Misery wasn’t really scary, just suspenseful with some gross parts dealing with appendages being removed. I’m way worse at handling stuff like that. Have you seen Gerald’s Game? I had to literally walk to the other side of the house and plug my ears until the gross part was over. And I still felt lightheaded just thinking about it.

I just watched a Turkish horror movie where someone was possessed and started eating their own hair (gross, I almost puked) before screaming and I can’t go to the toilet without running to and from my room at night D:

      4. It’s a Netflix movie based on a King novel. It was really, really good, but it’s definitely got some creepy/scary vibes and that gross factor. Hahaha, that’s so specific. My bf’s cousin is like that with hair eating. If I think about it like, getting stuck in my throat or something I get an icky feeling about that kinda thing too. Idk when I got so sensitive about gory stuff, but I just can’t handle anything anymore!

  8. I just finished Stiff: The Curious Life of Human Cadavers this morning during my snow day. I really enjoyed it, but parts of it took time to power through. It’s 100% worth the read if you’re into a kind of twisted humor. I should have a review of it up on my blog on Friday! If you get to it, you’ll have to let me know how you like it!
