Three Kara Facts

  • I love grandma hobbies. Cross stitching, crocheting, knitting, sewing… Anything you think a grandma would enjoy doing, I’ve probably tried it and loved it. I’m not necessarily good at all of those things (I haven’t quite got the hang of sewing machines yet), but I love those types of hobbies all the same. I’m mostly into cross stitching. Here are some of my favorites that I’ve done:

  • One of my favorite things in the world is going to concerts. In the last 5 years, I’ve been to 21 concerts, and IT’S NOT ENOUGH. A few of my favorite lives bands are The Front Bottoms (my fave band of all time <3), Against Me!, and We Are Scientists, all of whom I’ve seen at least twice. They always sound great, and they always seem so happy to be there, which makes me happy to be there, too.

  • I have horrible, horrible vision. I have since I was about 9 or so. My current prescription is -7.50 in one eye and -8.00 in the other. I once asked my eye doctor what my vision would be considered on the 20/20 scale, and he told me it’d be like, 20/400. Meaning what I can see at 20 feet, someone with perfect vision can see at 400 feet. To give you an idea of what that looks like, it’s basically like this:
myopia
My vision vs. 20/20 vision (image c/o EyeCareDoctor.com)

It’s pretty crazy. One day I hope to get lasik done, but I’m wanting to wait until I can afford to see a really good doctor so there’s not as much risk involved.

Marina’s Questions

— Is there anything you’re proud of doing/achieving and what is it?

I’m most proud of becoming a published author. I’ve loved to write ever since I was a kid (raise your hand if you also write angsty high school poetry), and I’ve always had confidence in my writing, but I never expected to actually publish anything. Two have two of my short stories published within the last few months is a dream come true — a dream I didn’t even know I had, haha!

There were a few times in high school where I got recognition, though. I wrote a lot of children’s books in high school (idk what it was with teachers and children’s book assignments), and one of my teachers tried to set me up with a publisher for one book I submitted. I remember being hella surprised cause I literally churned that thing out in a couple hours the night before it was due. But I was a lazy high school student, and I wasn’t thinking about publication at the time. I didn’t even meet up with the publisher. Dumb, dumb high school Kara.

I also won a “write like Emily Dickinson” contest in 11th grade (pro tip: just focus on death and make use of that capitalization and hyphenation and wham bam thank you ma’am, there’s Dickinson). I won a $25 gift card to the store of my choice. Being Captain Goth back then, I chose Hot Topic 😂 Do you guys wanna read my winning poem??

Silent as the haunting Night —
She slowly ambles on
Walking through the dead fall leaves
Letting fall — her Crown

Cold blue eyes piercing the fog
Turning heads of stone
Resting beneath blankets — of dirt
Still not becoming warm

Her fingertips — like ice to touch
Her lips a chilling blue
Her countenance — a Frightening sight
Of one who once was True

She lies among her new-found friends
As cold and stiff as She
Heads sleeping on — pillows of stone
Forever there to lay

#goth 😎

— In your perfect dictatorship day-dream, which book would you ban and which one you’d give to the masses for free?

I honestly don’t think any book should be banned! Even the books I absolutely hate or think are stupid or whatever. Someone out there probably likes those, so why deprive them of the literature they like? As for which one I’d give out for free… man, I don’t even know. I think I’d pick Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin. It’s a beautiful, heartbreaking book about homosexuality and society, and it’s super important and relevant today, despite it being written in the 50s. It’s astounding how judgmental people still are regarding sexuality and what other people do in their own homes. “Land of the free” my ass. Though I’m (mostly) straight myself, a lot of my really good friends are gay and some of the best people I’ve ever met, and they don’t deserve to be looked at any differently than anyone else. I’m sure there are other important LGBT books out there that would be beneficial for everyone to read, but Giovanni’s Room is the one that’s stuck with me the most, so there ya go.

— If Edward Cullen bit you and you gained immortality, what would you dedicate your life to? After being properly disinfected and de-sparkled of course.

Bahaha, that linked gif. So sparkly. I’d probably dedicate my life to some form of education. I was never good at science, so I probably couldn’t create the cure for cancer or anything. But I could do the research for something like that and provide educational write-ups or something. I really just want to write, so I’d find some way to do that while also giving some good back to society. Who knows, maybe I’d write a short story that would give NASA an idea for new space exploration, or a blog post that would inspire scientists to new takes on research, or an article that would convince certain presidents to gtfo of office before they ruin the country. You never know — writing has power!

— Imagine your ultimate reading moment – the setting, the time, the weather conditions, the chair coziness aspect, every bit.

Mid-morning, like 10am. My back deck. Sunny with a slight overcast, temperature in the mid-60s (Fahrenheit). Spring (but NO POLLEN. So maybe early autumn instead, before it gets cold enough to wear a jacket). No socks or shoes. My cats are laying out on the deck, sunbathing. I have a comfier swing than the one that’s out there now. Something with cushions. Something that doesn’t feel like it’s about to fall apart if I move the wrong way. I’ve got some sort of refreshing drink. Iced tea or a fruit smoothie or something.

— Why is a raven like a writing desk? 😅 (this is the weird/funny question obviously)

I’m SO bad at riddles. I legitimately have no idea. They both can be black? They have… sharp edges? Oh my god, I don’t know 😂

I Nominate…

A lot of the bloggers I’d like to nominate have already been nominated by Marina! Frankie, Hana, and Lacy, consider yourselves double-tagged 😀 I also think I’m just going to do 5 nominees to go along with the 5 questions. So my other two nominees are…

Dania @ Bookish Thoughts

Alexis @ Arguably Alexis

If you’ve already been nominated or aren’t interested in doing this tag, no worries!

My Questions

  1.  What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever used as a bookmark?
  2. If you had to tattoo one line/image/reference to one book somewhere on your body, what would that line/image/reference be and where would you get it tattooed?
  3. If you lived in the ocean, which sea creature would be your bff? (I guess this would be the weird one, haha)
  4. What’s your dream job, and what are you doing to work towards the goal of obtaining that job?
  5. Would you ever want to travel into space? Why or why not?

My Best Post

Aside from the Sunshine Blogger Award, my post with the most views is my Book Blogger Hop response about retellings. I really liked this one because I got to talk about Shakespeare things, and I do love me some Shakespeare! 😀

  1. OMG I LOVE your cross stitching!!! I can’t decide which one is the best, maybe the Alien or the Unicorn or the Shakesbee or or..the rude Pikachu I DON’T KNOW OK?! ❤ ❤ ❤

Ahhh I'm so sorry about your vision! My sister's is as bad as yours, she's doing the laser surgery this month hopefully, for 1000e in total, expensive as f***, but I guess it's even more in US?

I loove all your answers and questions, go and write girl! And such a treat that Emily Dickinson bought you some goth clothes, I would have done the same hahaha 😀

    1. Ahhhh, thank you! I used to do them a lot, but it makes your wrist/hand hurt after a while, hahaha. Most of them I’ve either given away to friends or sold, but I kept the Pikachu one cause it’s just ❤

Aw, yay for her! Boo for the cost, though. The cost here ranges depending on where you go. Some places offer it for like, a few hundred dollars, but idk that seems *too* cheap to me. I'd be worried about how good the doctor is. I just did some quick research, and it looks like the average cost is around $4500. So. Yeah. Super expensive, lol. But I think you can use health insurance to cut the cost down some.

Hahaha, I felt it was only right. It is Dickinson, after all.

      1. Ahh I know that feeling, I used to get horrible wrist/thumb/upper hand pain when I was drawing a lot :S But don’t quit it, these works are awesome! 😀

Those cheap deals sound suspicious to me too haha, but I hope you’ll manage to do it some day and improve your sight 🙂

  2. Thanks for tagging me ❤ ❤ ❤ I don't think I am ~mysterious~ hehe but I'll try to fit in with the description hahaha.

ALSO, I WAS JUST LOOKING AT SOME CROSS STITCH PATTERNS and was like "wtf they're so cute but idk how to start" and then I saw your post about cross stitching?? I've done crochet and knitting in my first year at uni, but I've never done cross stitch before! Pikachu looks adorable.

I've never written angsty high school poetry (my English teacher tried to make me write a poem, I failed miserably), but I've written a heck ton of angsty high school essays. Someone always ends up dead. What the actual fuck was me in high school thinking??

    1. Haha, I think they mean mysterious like, “I wanna get to know you better” kind of mysterious, you know? It’s a weird name for an award, and I only just figured out that it didn’t actually mean mysterious like that, lol.

Waaaah!!! That’s so crazy! You should totally start cross stitching! It’s really more time consuming than hard, and there’s tons of free patterns available online and tons of tutorial videos on different stitching techniques on YouTube. It’s fun!

Haha, as long as there’s some angst in there, I think you did high school right. I STILL write like that. I wanna read your angsty high school essays!

  3. OMG at your stitching. I love them all and want each one on my wall. The pikachu one omgggg.

Also thanks for the tag. xD I’m seriously just gonna do both your questions LOL!

That poem is actually pretty good. Also, goth phase. Oof, mine was horrible. I relate so muccchh.
Most of my closet is STILL black, but I ditched all the chains and hardcore goth clothes LOL!

    1. Thank youuu!!! ❤ Maybe I'll start selling them again sometime soon. I haven't made one in a while!

Haha, yay! Can't wait to read your answers 😀

Thanks! Despite its gothiness, I actually like it, too. Hahaha, I still prefer black clothes, too! But man I went crazy with it in high school. But I was like, really bad at it, and all the chains and bondage straps on my pants would always get caught on chairs and the booths in the lunch room and, no joke, I ripped giant holes in my pants on a weekly basis. Luckily my mom was good at sewing and I always wore really baggy shirts, hahaha. Oh, high school.

      1. I’d definitely buy if you started selling!!

Giiirrll, I wore tutus to middle school. High school was really skinny jeans and chains. My bangs were always in my eyes. OH THE CRINGE! I can’t.
Now it seems we are more of the mature gothy variety xD thank goodness

  4. Thanks for the double tag! I love your questions, so I’ll have to do this tag a second time around 🙂
That’s so cool that your work has been published! You go, girl! About the lasik… I think it’s definitely a smart move to wait on the lasik. If you go to a cheaper one, they absolutely will not do as good of a job (which is obvious, I assume), but the reason I say this is because that’s what I did. And I ended up having to get the lasik RE-done because the first time wasn’t done good enough. My vision was perfect for a while, but it wore off within a couple years.

    Like

    1. Sure thing! 😀 Oh, damn, really?? I know your vision will still deteriorate after a while, but after just a few years?? I’ve never heard of that. One of my friends got it done when he was in his 20s and he didn’t have to get any sort of prescription lenses again until he was in his 40s. But I mean, shit, if I can get 20 good years without having to deal with terrible eyesight, I’m down! That’s nuts that you had to get it re-done so soon, though. Was it super expensive the second time around?

Also. Ugh. Camp NaNoWriMo. I haven’t even started anything >_<

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Wow. 20 years is amazing! They even told me when I got it done that a lot of people end up having to get it re-done or adjusted pretty soon after (and they re-do it for you for half the price), but whoop-de-do… I’d like to only have had to pay once and have it last 20 years!! ya know?

But yeah… I’m failing at Camp right now! I got behind but I’ll be writing a little bit tonight. I had some other projects with deadlines that I had to finish over the last couple days. Plus I am considering changing my story for Camp… but I don’t know yet…

        Like

      2. Well at least they give you a discount. Though they should do it for free the second time around if you have to go back so soon!

Oh good, I’m not the only one, haha. I write a little bit with that collab story that one blogger’s doing. So that counts, right? I don’t even have any idea of what I want to do for the Camp. I’m considering using a story I’ve already started and just using Camp as motivation to finish it.

        Liked by 1 person

      3. I agree! They should do it for free… especially since it was so expensive to begin with (even the cheaper priced ones!)

That definitely counts! 😉 I think I may end up doing the same thing, though… working on a story I’ve already started. I really want to expand one of my flash pieces, so I may do that instead of starting a whole new piece.

        Like

      4. Probably! If I can ever finish it lol. I’ve been completely behind because I’ve been focusing on other writing (which is silly). I need to get caught up ASAP because I’m no where near my 12K goal. I had no intention of getting this behind! I’m ashamed *runs and hides*

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Well they do Camp all throughout the summer right? So there’s always next month! I’ve given up on my goal of writing anything. I just got a job so idk how much free time I’ll have :/

  5. Thank you for tagging me! I’ve never done one of these before — how does it work exactly? I’ve read the instructions at the top, but I haven’t actually communicated much with other bloggers besides you so far (eeeppp). So I’m afraid I don’t have anyone to pass it along too.

    Like

    1. That’s okay if you don’t have anyone to tag! Sometimes I’ll just say “whoever wants to join in, consider yourself tagged” or something like that. Otherwise, just copy and paste the questions and the rules in a new post and have at it! 😀
