Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop (March 30-April 5) — Book Clubbin’

The Book Blogger Hop is a meme hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. Each week, a new book-themed question is posted, and this week’s question is…

How many book clubs do you belong in? If you do belong to an in-person book club, do you have meetings in the day or evening? Do you meet at someone’s house or meet at a local restaurant or coffee house?

I don’t think I’ve ever participated in a book club. I like the idea of reading the same book with a bunch of people, particularly for the discussions, but it also kind of feels like a chore to me, having to read a certain portion of the book by a certain day. It does suck not having someone else to talk to about what I’m reading, but I prefer reading at my own pace and picking out my own books to read next rather than having to read what the group wants to read.

Of course, I love it when I read a book that a friend recommended, or they read one I recommended, or we just happen to have read the same book, because I don’t normally have many people to talk to about books (except in the blogging world, of course). But I don’t normally go out of my way to read a book along with a group of readers. I like doing my own thing.

Do you prefer book clubs or solo reading?

  1. I completely agree! Whilst I like the idea of having a group to discuss a specific book with, I’m not really inclined to commit to a deadline to read a certain book by. I rather just take it by my own pace and I think having to finish a specific book by a specific date would stress me out. I also like being able to freely read what I feel like rather than having to read an ‘assigned’ book. But it is something that I think I would consider if the group were more lax about it. Either way, I prefer to solo read at the moment, if only because I don’t have much experience with group reading.

  2. I’m in a 10.000 people book club, hosted by a local publishing house, and it was really interesting at first – having someone to talk books, but eventually it turned out I’m in a minority there as like 80% of the group reads romance or just popular fiction, and they just keep nagging about certain books every day, so I think I’ll quit soon, as I’ve found like minded people in blogworld 🙂 Really, they kept talking about “A man called Ove” every single day (still do), so I got put off by it and don’t think I’ll read it, even though it’s supposed to be great :/

    1. Whaaaaat??? 10,000 people?!?!? That sounds crazy! Pft, romance books are boring. Yeah, I imagine it’s hard finding a book everyone will want to read in a book club. I feel like blogging is a much better way to connect with other people who read the same books as you.

  3. I agree 100% with you, I enjoy solo reading a lot more, just because I’m horrible at sticking to a schedule and I guess it’s better to just read whenever I can and don’t really force myself haha

  4. I have been in online book clubs before (never in-person clubs), and for the most part, I’ve enjoyed them. I have been in some where everyone reads a certain amount of pages/chapters per day, then answers discussion questions for the section. I’ve also been in some where you just have to read the whole book by the end of the month, and then discuss. I liked both, but sometimes it’s hard to stay in line with a reading schedule. Like you mentioned, you might want to read faster or slower than what’s required. Still, I do enjoy reading with others every now and then. Especially buddy reads between myself and another person (or even a couple other people).

So… if you ever want to read a book with someone so you can discuss it, I’m here!! We don’t have to set a schedule or anything, if you don’t want to! We can make it as stress-free and fun as possible🙂 Just an idea in case you’re ever interested!

    1. I feel like reading a book a month rather than reading a certain number of pages would work a lot better. Buddy reading sounds interesting, though. I’ve never done that, but it would be nice to have someone to discuss the book with. I’ll take you up on that offer sometime! Maybe after I finish my current reads? Did you have a book in mind?

      1. That sounds good to me! I don’t have anything in particular in mind… I read from basically all genres (except straight up romance). So if there’s anything you’re interested in reading soon, let me know and I’ll check it out! And see if we can work something out soon. 🙂
